Day 8: Tour of the Kitchens and Filipino Crew Show
April 12th, 2008 at 10:11 am (traveling)
Yesterday was an interesting day as far as entertainment. In the morning, we attempted to play basketball in the court on top of the ship. The high winds and moving ground made it, *ahem* unique — if you stood in the middle of the court and threw the ball one way, it would go flying all the way across the court and slam into the backboard. But if you threw it in the opposite direction, it wouldn’t make it halfway!
Later we took a tour of the kitchen. The kitchen was huge, and it felt strangely like being in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Only the line was so long, by the time we got in the guide had given up narrating, so it turned into a self-tour.
That night our Filipino crew put on a show for all the passengers. It took place in an actual theater on the ship, and there was singing, Filipino dances, something Bad having to do with men dressed as women planting rice, and more. The MC was of course a Filipino guy (probably one of our waiters), who sang and did Michael Jackson moves.
At the end they all came out on stage for curtain call, and it was funny seeing them all trying to look normal, even though one of them had a ridiculous oval thing on his head and another conspicuously had a sword and shield in his hands.
As I hope you’ve guessed, I took lots of video of this event, and would the AtlanticInterWebTubes allow, it would all be on YouTube — but alas, I’m afraid it will have to wait until we get home (or maybe Rome?).
Tomorrow we dock in Funchal, on the island of Madeira, at 7am. I’ll finally get to test out my Portuguese skills (onde e o banheiro?)! We’ll be there for about ten hours, which is enough time for me to take around 300 photos… be prepared!
